Two-and-a-half-hours drive from Bangkok is the Erawan National Park – another convenient getaway from the unrest in Bangkok.
Walking the nature trails provides nature detail in abundance. This reptile was frozen to a tree trunk as I approached. I too, froze and carefully composed using the 12-60mm F2.8-4.0 SWD Standard Wide Zoom ( I carry this lens ready for action) edging closer after a few safety shots.
When walking in forests looking for subjects I enable a few ready-made settings such as:
1. ISO 100 or 200 depending on light conditions. 2. F5.6 for reasonable depth of field and shutter speed. 3. IS-1 is enabled for likely hand-held shots (keep it set at all times unless using a tripod). 4. Focus area selection is set to single target as I am expecting a small subject in the frame and I need the focus to recognise this. 5. Function key toggles between auto focus and manual focus. I trust my eyes! 6. Shutter release on L (Low) – typically at 3 frames per second. 7. On-camera flash raised. I find fill-flash in a dimly-lit forest very useful. Use with restraint though as it can easily send a reptile or mammal darting in the opposite direction! 8. These settings can be saved in your camera in My Mode or Custom Reset for quick access.
