Australian Geographic have kindly commissioned me for a four-day shoot near Riversleigh, Queensland. This is a well-known dinosaur dig site and I hope to bring some of the highlights of the dig to AG readers. The project is overseen by Mike Archer from the Australian Museum, Hendrick Godthelp and Suzanne Hand from the University of New South Wales. A fascinating few days ahead. I’ve never spent time in Queensland’s outback so I feel privileged to have the opportunity to work with experts in their field.
My last outback adventure was on the Larapinta Trail in the Northern Territory as a host for the Australian Geographic Society in 2006. Way back in 1991 I walked across South Australia with a few colleagues as part of the OZCROSS team attempting to cross Australia. We made it to the Coongee Lakes. I was a 25-year-old backpacking pom. More of that in a new post.
Near Jay Creek, Larapinta Trail, NT, 2006
The base is Adel’s Grove, 200 km southwest of Burketown and 410 km northwest of Cloncurry. Situated on Lawn Hill Creek, Adel’s Grove is adjacent to Lawn Hill National Park and 50kms from the World Heritage listed Riversleigh Fossil deposits. I leave Sydney on Wednesday 30th June and head for Mt Isa, pick up a 4WD and make the four hour drive to Adel’s Grove keeping my wits about me not to miss the turn offs to dinosaur country. I’ll be sure to keep an eye out for a fossil under my foot.
