Phra Sumen Fort is a short stroll from my flat and is in a park situated along the Chao Phraya River and a great place to chill out and photograph the changing light on the King Rama VIII bridge. I decided to spend the afternoon photographing with the art filters. Experimentation is a brilliant incentive with digital and I wholeheartedly recommend you put your camera through it’s paces.

The sun was bright and the clouds dotted around the imposing fort. The sheer white walls and shimmering blue sky could, I thought, be perfect for some colour shift and contrast pushing. Art filter 8 – cross process – provided a dramatic example of why I am so excited to have the EP-2 alongside my workhorse E-3.
Cross processing goes back to film days when the procedure of deliberately processing print film with slide chemicals (E6) and slide film with print chemicals (C41) dramatically shifting colour and contrast in an almost surreal, other-worldly way. This can be replicated in Photoshop but it aids experimentation to have it there in your camera.

Example: The image above left, is taken with standard aperture priority, the right image with art filter 8 – ‘cross process’. The clouds and sky colour are the most obvious example of the effect of the cross process filter – see below also. I loved the drama and feel of these shots. The EP-2 has four aspect ratios to choose from. 4:3, 16:9, 3:2 and 6:6. Changing the aspect ratio can enhance a suitable composition.
